This concert set improved our cultural competence because we learned about different styles of music from all over the world and why certain styles are played a certain way. Playing together in a big band increased our collaboration because we had to work together to create a performance we were proud to present to the public.
The three songs we played were Zebrano by Andrew Neu, Whodunnit by Gordon Goodwin, and Alice in Wonderland arranged by Jack Cooper. Zebrano is an Afro-Cuban song, this style features a rhythmic pulse. Whodunnit is a blue grass swing, this style features a laid back feel with a lot of solos. Alice in Wonderland is a waltz that is swung, this style is in three, but it has a more lively feel than a traditional waltz.
I thought I performed well, but I feel that I could have brought home my music more to practice. I was very productive and focused during rehearsals, so I felt that I did not need to practice at home.
